| NASSCOM launches National Skills Registry for IT Professionals

New Delhi

A global first, demonstrating India’s leadership in security practices within the IT industry

NASSCOM, the premier trade body and 'voice' of the IT software and service industry in India, today announced the launch of the first ever National Skills Registry for IT professionals at the India – US Information Security Summit 2006. The NSR was launched by the Hon'ble Minister of Information Technology and Communications - Mr. Dayanidhi Maran at the inaugural session of the Summit.

NASSCOM in collaboration with the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) has launched National Skills Registry (NSR), in an attempt to further strengthen security in the Indian IT industry. This will be a centralized database of information about the employee's professional and educational background. The NSR has been specifically designed to ensure authenticity of data through independent verification and biometric identification of the individual.

How NSR will help
  • Risk of engaging any employee on the basis of fake/forged documents is minimized
  • Benefit of background check done by any of the NASSCOM member companies will be available across the industry. This will reduce cost and time involved conducting background checks independently
  • Will facilitate faster completion of HR processes that depend on background checks
  • Data is 'owned by the employee', hence no risk of information being misused, customers can view information directly only on employee's consent
  • Pro-active step by Indian IT/BPO industry to ensure customer information is in safe and secure hands
Speaking at the launch of the NSR at the India – US Information Security Summit 2006, Mr. Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM said, "Security has always been a priority area for us and we have made a continuous effort to make India a secure outsourcing destination through various initiatives. The National Skills Registry is a global first of its kind and this central repository will contain personal, professional and educational information about employees of the IT and BPO industry. Independent verification of data and biometric identification will not only increase security for companies and customers, but will protect employees from criminal elements seeking to misuse their ID. This will be one more step towards sustaining India's competitive advantage in the global market."

"The India – US Information Security Summit has focussed on developing the culture of Information Security and is the ideal platform for launch of the National Skills Registry", he added.

NASSCOM is looking at the feasibility of extending a similar Registry to employees of the contractors to industry also, thus adding an additional layer of security for the industry.

The India-US Information Security Summit, now in its second year, is a joint effort of NASSCOM and Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) of US.

The two-day conclave will discuss both IT/BPO and client enterprise needs in each element of information security – people, process and technology - and highlight best practices and opportunities for further cooperation for tackling the global challenge of information security.
