| Anti-Piracy Activities

NASSCOM on its part has launched many initiatives to deter and discourage piracy over the past few years. Some of these include:

  • Removal of import duty on software
  • Extensive Media campaign against piracy
  • Software Management Seminars for EDP managers at metro cities
  • Strict implementation of Code of Conduct for member companies of NASSCOM
  • Awareness and training programs for police officers and law enforcement authorities
  • Distribution of brochures and stickers explaining about "Software Piracy and the Law"
  • Anti-Piracy Billboards, Hotline for piracy complaints

The Government as well as the police and judiciary are helping and supporting the NASSCOM anti-piracy drive in various ways; amendments in the Copyright Act; training of the police; conducting raids and training of the judiciary

  • The decision by the Karnataka Government to make Karnataka a 'zero piracy state', is the most visible example of Government support and willingness to make India a zero piracy country
  • NASSCOM is also working with various state governments to create IPR cells in police departments. Although India is one of the countries that has the strongest IPR guidelines, implementation of these is sometimes a cause of worry. NASSCOM has worked effectively with the Indian government in devising strong IPR policies but there is a need to enhance enforcement. This highlights the need to have special courts that can deal with IPR issues.
  • Law enforcement infrastructure needs to be strengthened to handle piracy cases in India. With an ongoing training program, the Police in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai has become much more pro-active and is also initiating independent actions.
  • NASSCOM has joined forces with Mumbai Police to launch first-of-its kind Mumbai Cyber Lab (MCL). This unique entity helps provide training to the police personnel, create an interface between the police and people, spread awareness about Cyber Crime and related issues, interact with the corporates, financial institutions and educational institutions through organizing discussion forums, workshops etc. on the Cyber Safety, Cyber Crime and Cyber Laws.
