Global Leadership Awards

Beginning 2005, NASSCOM, India's leading ICT association, a catalyst to the country's IT industry, is instituting special Global Leadership Awards that recognize the contribution of these mavericks in making IT the tool for achieving business and individual excellence.

The Global Leadership Awards are an endeavor to reach out to these business leaders whose organizations have not only helped transform the international economy, but contributed extensively to India's growth and development. These creative minds are well known in India, especially among the entrepreneurial ICT community that considers them beacons and aspires to follow in their footsteps.

NASSCOM's Global Leadership Awards symbolize this coming together, this synergy. With these awards we salute the industry that is gradually touching the lives of one billion Indians and the men and women who have spurred its growth.

The Global Leadership Awards 2005 mark two decades of the existence of the Indian ICT industry and celebrate the achievement of excellence by global thought leaders.

The award will be given out in five categories namely Creativity, Vision, Innovation in Business, Business Leadership and IT Usage

The award ceremony will be conducted at the NASSCOM 2005: India Leadership Forum

AWARDS CATEGORIES & WINNERS

Award for Innovation in Business

This award is for a global business leader of a technology company that is well entrenched in the Indian market. How the company's Innovation Philosophy, and Go-localisation strategy has helped them achieve business excellence and success in the Indian market. It is with this award we recognize the leader of a company that has global-class, and being a technology-driven organisation, keeps its customers at the center of its universe.

Winner: Mr. Heinrich v. Pierer,Dr. jur. Dr.-Ing. E.h., Dipl.-Volksw, Chairman of the Managing Board of Siemens Aga and President and Chief Executive Officer of Siemens AG


Award for Creativity

This award is for a CEO who has been instrumental in growing his/her organization and enabled it to achieve global leadership through innovative business processes and strategies. By keeping it on the technology treadmill, deploying Best Practices and instilling within the company the rules of corporate governance, customer-centricity and services excellence, this leader has ensured that the organization is a cut above the rest in an intensely competitive environment. This leader has also used creative thinking to move the organization beyond its traditional role. He/she has transformed the company into a socially responsible entity, with a broader worldview and a mission to uplift the lives of global citizens using the power of IT.

Winner: Mr Craig R. Barrett, Chief Executive Officer, Intel Corporation
Craig R. Barrett became Intel's fourth President in May of 1997, and Chief Executive Officer in 1998. He was elected to Intel Corporation's Board of Directors in 1992. He served as Chief Operating Officer from 1993 to 1997. He began his tenure at Intel as a Technology Development manager in 1974. Prior to joining Intel, Dr. Barrett was an Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.


Award for Vision

This award is for that well recognized face within the global ICT sector that has caught the imagination of the world and its own company with unique, well defined organizational goals and vision. Not only have the strategies of this person helped the enterprise achieve immediate targets related to revenues, profitability and geographic expansion, they have also set it on the road ahead, towards its long-term, larger ambitions. The recipient of the Vision award is the able leader of an organization that has played a direction-setting role in the specific markets the company plays in. It is a person whose foresight has helped recognize and identify new market opportunities well before their time, grow them and make them viable platforms for business.

Winner: Ms Carly Fiorina, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hewlett-Packard Company
Throughout an extraordinary career in business, Carly Fiorina has successfully blazed new trails, taken risks and defied the odds. As the chairman and chief executive officer of global technology solutions provider HP, she has brought all of her skills to bear to write a new chapter in the life of a historic company.

Since joining HP in July 1999, Fiorina has led the reinvention of the company many associate with the birth of Silicon Valley, returning HP to its roots of innovation and inventiveness. Fiorina successfully led HP's controversial merger with Compaq Computer Corp., now recognized as the most successful high-tech merger in history.

In keeping with more than six decades of HP corporate stewardship, and at a time when corporations make up 51 of the 100 largest economies in the world, Fiorina has called for a new era of leadership, one in which corporate leaders have an opportunity to redefine the role of the corporation, to use profit engines to raise the capabilities, extend the hopes, and extinguish despair of people across the globe.

Fiorina has taken an unconventional route to becoming CEO of a leading technology company, earning a bachelor's degree in medieval history and philosophy from Stanford University. Fiorina holds a master's degree in business administration from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland at College Park, Md., and a master of science degree from MIT's Sloan School.


Award for Excellence in IT usage

This award is for a leader of a company that has used IT to achieve significant business benefits and gain global competitiveness. The recipient of this award is a CEO that has successfully invested and deployed Information Systems to make the organization more customer-oriented, profitable and bottom-line conscious. By driving IT within the company, the business leader has ensured that it brings more efficiencies into the supply chain, leading to improved products and services and customer delight. By rolling out strong IT strategies, this business leader has also enabled the employees of his/her company to keep abreast of state-of-the IT platforms and harness their power to improve personal productivity and performance within the organization.

Winner: Mr. Masamoto Yashiro, Chairman, President and CEO, Shinsei Bank, Japan
M. Yashiro is Chairman & CEO of Shinsei Bank, Ltd., previously the Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, which was nationalized in October 1998. In March 2000, a consortium of foreign investors led by the US private equity fund, Ripplewood Holdings acquired LTCB, and the bank made a fresh start as a private commercial bank and changed its name to Shinsei Bank. The bank was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in February 2004. Prior to assuming his current position, he had spent nine years (1989-1998) building up Citigroup's retail franchise in Japan. His positions at Citicorp included Country Corporate Officer (Japan), Executive Vice President (Citicorp/Citibank N.A.), President (Citicorp/Citibank Japan), and Chairman (Citicorp Japan).

Immediately prior to joining Citicorp, M. Yashiro was President of Esso Sekiyu K.K., an affiliate of Exxon Mobil Corporation. Positions he held at Exxon (1958-1989) included Senior Managing Director and Executive Vice President (Esso Sekiyu K.K.), Executive Assistant to Chairman & CEO (Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, predecessor of Exxon Mobil Corporation), President (Esso Sekiyu K.K.), and Executive Vice President, Esso Eastern (Exxon's Asia Pacific Regional Company). He was born in Tokyo in 1929. He has a B.A. degree in Jurisprudence from Kyoto University and an M.A. in International Relations from Tokyo University.


Award for Excellence as a "Business Leader"

This award is for a leader who has redefined the boundaries of all that's possible in the realm of business. Business leaders whose organizations have not only helped transform the international economy, but have contributed extensively to India's growth and development. With these awards we salute the industry that is gradually improving the lives of one billion Indians and the leaders who have spurred its growth.

Winner: Mr Stephen Green, Group Chief Executive, HSBC Holdings plc
Age 55. Group Chief Executive. An executive Director since 1998. Executive Director, Corporate, Investment Banking and Markets from 1998 to 2003. Joined HSBC in 1982. Group Treasurer from 1992 to 1998. Chairman of HSBC Bank Middle East Limited and HSBC Private Banking Holdings (Suisse) S.A. Deputy Chairman of HSBC Bank plc. A Director of The Bank of Bermuda Limited, CCF S.A., The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, Grupo Financiero HSBC, S.A. de C.V., HSBC North America Holdings Inc. and HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt KGaA.
