The "Internet of things" (IoT) is becoming an increasingly growing topic of conversation both in the workplace and outside it. It's a concept that not only has the potential to impact how we work but also how we live.
At the elementary level, IoT refers to the connection of everyday objects to one another and to the Internet thereby providing users a smarter, faster and more efficient experience. While most of the internet that we see today is just a network of computers, tablets, handheld devices or wearables, Internet of Things aims to make every device or thing in our daily life a part of the connected world so that we can automate and control them more effectively and help make our lives easier.
IoT on billions of machines will help gather valuable inputs in real-time across the world to generate much more intelligent and predicable business information. This is possible owing to Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology that allows both wireless and wired systems to communicate with each other without manual intervention. This real-time information is the one that would help organisations create differentiation in services and enhance profitability against competition.
Internet of Things is by far, the most promising industry at this time with around 20 billion + devices expected to be a part of this network by 2018. On a broader scale IoT can be applied to things like transportation networks, or smart cities which can help reduce waste and improve energy efficiency. With the growing adoption of Internet and Social Media, security is a big issue with billions of devices being connected and it is imperative to stay secure while still sharing and accessing information.
Does IoT answer all these is something that we will discuss and debate.
