Project Management Vs Product Management

Overview

While Project Management is commonly understood and practiced in the industry, not many practitioners or companies themselves are aware of Product Management, and how it is different from Project Management. This new PM role requires a different mindset and skillset that must be thoroughly understood.

Product management is an approach for centrally coordinating the activities surrounding the initial planning, development and the long-term support and enhancement of a product. Project management refers to the processes used to create or enhance the product.

Product management involves taking several important decisions during each of the stages of the product lifecycle journey. Product Managers need to be aware of the productizing process which is a framework that brings together the core competencies that are necessary to consistently build successful products, and are applicable across the spectrum from large companies to startups, and to a range of products spanning enterprise, consumer and digital.
