R. Chandrasekaran heads Cognizant, a leading provider of information technology, consulting, and business process outsourcing services, dedicated to helping the world's leading companies build stronger businesses. Headquartered in Teaneck, New Jersey (U.S.), Cognizant combines a passion for client satisfaction, technology innovation, deep industry and business process expertise and a global, collaborative workforce that embodies the future of work. With over 50 delivery centres worldwide and approximately 156,700 employees as of December 31, 2012, Cognizant is ranked among the top performing and fastest growing companies in the world.
As the Group Chief Executive of a global corporation, Chandrasekaran believes he can help the industry and NASSCOM get more global. He can for instance, facilitate the creation of a global platform—an overseas NASSCOM Leadership Forum focused largely on clients and markets.
Having been a part of the NASSCOM global trade committee, he feels he can contribute to product and services globalisation, helping address issues related to immigration, IP protection, localisation, etc. As a large global corporation, Cognizant has invested in lobbyists who drive public policy and government affairs and has many of its senior leaders in the executive boards and councils of other global professional and trade bodies/chambers of commerce. Chandrasekaran believes he can leverage the canvas of network and support to make global trade with different countries more effective.
According to Chandrasekaran, NASSCOM needs to become as global as possible and inclusive. It needs to enhance educational relevance and skills development in India, working closely with educational institutions. At the same time, it has to drive innovation and focus on newer IT service delivery which is driving changes in how value is delivered to clients/consumers.
To help SMEs, NASSCOM needs to drive true thought leadership, create specialist groups to help a heterogeneous mix of solutions, products and services, build an entrepreneurial culture and celebrate failures as much as successes, a la silicon valley and finally have a distinguished global advisory committee of entrepreneurs, P/E players, industry leaders (across industries of specialisation), economists, marketers, and, so on, to help drive value.
Chandrasekaran has over 25 years of experience in the global information technology industry. Currently, Chandrasekaran is the Group Chief Executive, Technology & Operations at Cognizant, which is a part of the NASDAQ 100 and S&P 500 indices, and the Fortune 500 list.
