Any product manager considering switching to a different domain (industry, type of customer such as B2C or B2B, type of product such as SaaS/Mobile/Desktop) faces this question – will my product management (PM) skills be relevant in the new domain. Keeping domain expertise aside, PM skills are domain agnostic. You need to build a core set of PM skills irrespective of domain. Each domain presents new learning and challenges (including unlearning some from the past). What might change is the mix – you may need to dial up or down certain skills – and tools. With experience, you learn to vary this mix of skills and tools for any given domain.
