Welcome to this edition of India Means Innovation, where we discuss the technologically complex innovations coming out of India. Today we have with us Mohan Goli, Managing Director of Samsung Research Institute in Bangalore. Samsung is a global powerhouse and needs no introduction. Welcome, Mohan.

00:00:34 MOHAN RAO GOLI
Pleasure is mine, Aditya.

00:00:35 ADITYA NATH JHA
Mohan Samsung Research Institute in Sri Bangalore has had a rich history of innovation over the last 10 years. But today we will talk about Galaxy AI that is powering the flagship mobile brands of Samsung. Phones are an integral part of everyone's lives. You know, it's like an extension of our body. Now can you tell us how does Galaxy AI help the user?

00:01:02 MOHAN RAO GOLI
In the Galaxy AI, we call it as a several assisted features to the consumers like a call assist or message assist or is like camera assist, browser assist. So wherever the consumer is using the smartphone for their own productivity and for their own convenience, how Galaxy AI is becoming like assistant to them and then creating that efficiency for the people is the thought behind introducing Galaxy AI.

00:01:34 ADITYA NATH JHA
So let us take call assist. So, what does Galaxy AI do if I am making a call?

00:01:40 MOHAN RAO GOLI
Call assist will make sure that during the live call say for example somebody speaking Hindi and somebody else is speaking Korean, right. The guy can speak freely in Korean. So that in the live call it get translated to the Hindi and then I can listen to Hindi and I can speak in Hindi and then it will it will translate to the Korean and then it will be it will be given to the my partner there.

00:02:06 ADITYA NATH JHA
So breaks down the language barrier in real time on a live call.

00:02:12 MOHAN RAO GOLI
That is the assist feature.

00:02:13 ADITYA NATH JHA
Apart from call assist, you talked about message assist and browser assist. Can you tell us about that?

00:02:20 MOHAN RAO GOLI
These days lot of text chat is going on between the people, right? So some busy people would like to understand that. How do I summarize? I mean how I am not able to remember that there is a commitment made on the dinner for the next week for for so and so guys. So it can summarize this entire conversation and maybe put it in the calendar.

00:02:44 ADITYA NATH JHA
So if it can summarize your messages, if you go to a web page, it can summarize a web page article for you.

00:02:50 MOHAN RAO GOLI
In case of browse assist, I'm in a hurry and I can't read the entire article, so I will ask Galaxy AI to summarize to me and then it will give the beautiful summary so that I can understand the crux of that particular article.

00:03:03 ADITYA NATH JHA
The camera is an integral part of the mobile phone, right? So, what does Galaxy AI do to the camera, the computer vision algorithms in this digital camera is able to create the beautiful pictures but what is not able to create is that during the low light scenarios where the human eye is also cannot see it. So using the AI model complementing with this computer vision algorithms we are able to create the very nice low light of photography. Once you take the pictures I have to share with my friends family while sharing also if you have to add some missing elements. If I want to erase some of the unwanted things that is there, I can easily can do using the Galaxy AI and. What happens if I take the picture of my photograph and send it to someone? It's a sensitive document. Galaxy AI will stop me, or it won’t care.

00:04:04 MOHAN RAO GOLI
This is very interesting question, Aditya, actually. So there's a lot of sensitive information, not just the photo or some, some of our personal informations like our passports, our Azhar cards, our digital identities, right? So these are documents, right? So people are sharing across the social medias these days. While sharing, Galaxy AI will identify that this document is sensitive in nature or not. And then we will give the caution to the user because we can't block it. Galaxy AI will come up and then say that hey looks like you are sharing this kind of sensitive personal identity, are you ok to share it then if user choice to share it or not?

00:04:48 ADITYA NATH JHA
So security and privacy, can you talk about that? Because that becomes very important in this context.

00:04:57 MOHAN RAO GOLI
Yeah, Samsung means innovation, so while we are preparing the any kind of innovations, any kind of solutions, security and privacy will play very, very important role. So we created a NOx which is a kind of military grade security mechanisms. Security algorithms which will always will be on the production for the consumers when they are sharing sensitive information or many malware is coming in. Underlying security algorithms will identify and then either remove the malware or the caution the users to what to do the next steps.

00:05:44 ADITYA NATH JHA
So this was introduced in S24, right? Now you're in S25 as well as the Z series, right? So how many? About 50 million, forty, 50 million units out there in the world with Galaxy Air.

00:05:58 MOHAN RAO GOLI
Easily about the 50 million plus people are currently using it constantly improving the features both from the like I mentioned vision intelligence or text intelligence and context aware intelligences. And we are also thinking about how to personalize the each of the users, how AI can become like your personal assistant, which you may not want to share with even with your family members, right?

00:06:27 ADITYA NATH JHA
And all of this has been designed and architect and developed at Samsung Research Institute here in Bangalore.

00:06:38 MOHAN RAO GOLI
I would say that majority part of this Galaxy AI gets designed and developed in Bangalore R&D centre.

00:06:46 ADITYA NATH JHA
Can you talk about the mindset change that is required? You know, from developing point based solutions to owning global innovations.

00:06:56 MOHAN RAO GOLI
That is very, very important. There is a mindset change that hey, somebody created the standard, we are converting the code, let's create the standard itself, right. So that was the shift happened in the people's mind then you know what the innovation flown like anything. That's beauty of this R&D center.

00:07:17 ADITYA NATH JHA
Really. And Galaxy AI is a great example of that exactly. And it's also a great example of India means innovation.

00:07:26 MOHAN RAO GOLI
Thank you. Thank you so much.
